About CAN

CAN International (“CAN”), an immigrant-focused non-profit organization, was incorporated on May 5, 2021. We strive to engage and provide immigrant youths with advisory services, soft skills training, and networking opportunities. We hope to equip them with confidence for college, career, and life endeavors.

The seed of CAN was sown in 2016 by a group of alumni from John Dewey High School Bilingual program, formerly known as CT Alumni Network, named after our revered high school teacher Mr. CT Chan (CT).

CT arrived in NYC with his family in the 90s and found himself helping and guiding his fellow immigrant neighbors with limited English competency. As he was planning his new career path in NYC, he came across the bilingual program in the Department of Education, a program designed for immigrant students transported to the US during their teen years. He realized this is where he can be most impactful and decided to continue his teaching career in NYC.

He soon found that limited English ability was only one of the challenges for this community; they had even less understanding of the culture and system, with the college application process being the biggest of them all. These students lacked adequate preparation for SAT, college application essays, and career advice. His students were unaware of the many hidden opportunities for scholarships, grants, internships—the broad network for future access to rewarding careers.

CT realized the seven hours during the weekdays he spent with his students were not enough to prepare them — the field was uneven; they were climbing hills. He decided to go all-in and started a one-man free advisory and tutoring program. He spent countless hours providing free SAT tutoring sessions for his students. Instead of spending time after work on his hobbies and family, CT reviewed stacks of college application essays, college essays, and cover letters.  Not only did he set rigorous academic standards, he encouraged them to step out of their comfort zone and preached the importance of soft skills and networking.

We estimated CT’s remarkable journey impacted over 500 students over twenty years. He helped many of us unleash our potential and achieve success in our life and career. From entrepreneurs to leaders in communities, we the students of the Bilingual Program at John Dewey High school proudly formed and incorporated CAN International in 2021 to continue his mentoring legacy — to level the playing field and extend the same opportunity to the many generations of immigrants’ youths that follow us.

Testimonials

  • Member Story from Jane (University at Albany, SUNY)

“I felt the CAN mentoring program gave me a lot of help on careers and academics. My mentor Christy provided me with a lot of guidance about study abroad and helped me find  a temporary job two years ago. I used that job experience to build up my resume. Your life will be much easier and make less mistakes. I strongly recommend the CANership program because I feel that it’s a great opportunity and you will learn a lot from it.”

  • Member Story from Xing (Rochester Institute of Technology)

“During my college, it was my second time applying for the CAN program as a mentee. And this time, my mentor is a professional expert and has a lot of work experience in the professional field that relates to my major. I really appreciate the advice from him. He gave me very useful advice on professional knowledge, career path, job search, etc. Also, It’s great to participate in different activities and meet different people. Because of that, I had the opportunity to meet my current manager and tell her what I was looking for. And I got my first internship, working as an IT intern at Pocket Pet. The internship allows me to work with professionals, apply the knowledge that I learn in school, learn more new things, have some Hands-On experience, improve my skills, and gain teamwork experience. I am very grateful to my manager for giving me the opportunity to work at Pocket Pet.

Being part of CAN changed my life for the better. I truly appreciate everything that everyone in the program has done for me. It’s my big pleasure to be part of the CAN program. Also, I am very grateful to everyone who sacrificed their time to help me.”

  • Member Story from Qiwen (Cornell University)

The first time I learned about CAN was at my high school, I immediately decided to be part of the family because of the amazing mentors and resources it provides. I’ve attended several CAN events and I benefited from them every time. Meeting with professionals from different areas has broadened my horizon and helped me figure out what industry I am interested in.

Last summer, Christy posted an IT internship opportunity in the WeChat group chat. I contacted her, went through two interviews and finally got the offer. During the internship, I performed UAT and regression testing, attended IT and sales team meetings, and conducted market research on the US vet market. Not only did I learn technical skills, but also, I learned how to communicate with people in different teams. It was difficult to find internships as a sophomore, especially during Covid, so I am really grateful that I can have this amazing experience.

I would like to thank Christy and CAN for providing such an opportunity for me to gain more real-life working experience. I truly appreciate the effort that every CAN member has put in to help their mentees!

  • Partner Story from CAN University Patner,  Liushan (President of SASE Club at City College, CUNY)

“As a SASE leader, I was impressed with collaborating with CAN on the college professional event. CAN members are dedicated to sharing their career experiences or tips to the CCNY students, which are valuable for their futures. They could grow through practically involving and communicating with these professionals and improving themselves with the technical suggestions. I will highly recommend partnering with CAN, as it is a great platform to allow others to learn from diverse fields.”

  • Member Story from Yvonne (analyst at Andrew Davidson and Co)

As a member of the class of 2020, I graduated from college with an economics degree amid the pandemic. Job searching was difficult at that time; the programs that I applied shut down completely, and companies stopped hiring altogether. Out of choices, I became a math teacher at a charter school in Newark. While working as a teacher, I continuously followed my passion and was actively searching for works in the finance/economics sectors. Having a first job as a teacher made my transition and job searching journey even more difficult than before. I received numerous offers from schools for teaching roles while the financial companies questioned my ability to work in their environments.

During the CAN International career event in the summer of 2021, one of the CAN mentors, Vivian, was a guest speaker and offered to refer CAN members to an analyst job opportunity at her company. I reached out to her immediately after the event and talked to her about my situation, background, and capabilities. Without any hesitation, she introduced me to her boutique financial analytics company and the role that she used to work in and encouraged me to apply for the role. She walked me through the entire hiring process, including resume review, two interview preparations, and post-interview follow-ups. The job searching process went by smoothly with the help of Vivian. I was offered the job last November.

I hope my story would inspire you and show you the power of networking around a group of passionate individuals who are first generation Americans and are willing to help people alike to achieve their academic and career goals.
